Engineered hardwood is a term many people have heard of, but few understand. At True Hardwoods, we believe engineered wood flooring is ideal because it’s partially made from real wood and partially made from a selection of other ingredients.
A large portion of these floors is made from sawdust, wood fibers, and chemicals. However, to be true engineered hardwood flooring, the top layer must always be made from real, solid wood.
Engineered hardwood floors are the perfect mix of affordability that maximizes the benefits of solid wood floors while minimizing their drawbacks.
If you want a gorgeous hardwood aesthetic on a budget, this is the engineered flooring option for you.
Solid Wood vs. Engineered Wood
Both floors contain authentic wood, so what’s the difference?
Engineered wood flooring is made in a factory. It contains wood fibers, sawdust, glue, and a selection of chemicals. The most common type of engineered hardwood is Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), which is no more than sawdust and wood fibers held together by glue.
On the other hand, solid wood is cut directly from the forests, packed in a lumber mill, and then sliced up to create a floor. As you can imagine, solid wood flooring is rarely sustainable and is considerably more expensive.
We find many of our customers ask why they would choose engineered wood floors over a traditional solid wood equivalent.
So, why choose engineered flooring over solid wood?
Engineered wood is ideal for areas where solid wood would not be suitable. More humid areas of your home, such as your basement, can warp solid wood. If you’re still set on that authentic wood look, an engineered floor is the perfect alternative.
Although it doesn’t function as well in drier climates, there are few limits on where you can install this type of floor.
If you have engineered oak flooring in mind, most of your home is perfectly suited to a True Hardwoods engineered floor.
We take pride in the fact that we have a floor to suit any home. When shopping for the perfect flooring option for you, make sure you take into account the features of each type of floor.
Here’s what you need to look for:
Thickness
The thickness of the veneer (top layer) will determine exactly how durable your floor is. The cheapest floors can have as few as three layers.
We recommend opting for quality engineered flooring by selecting a floor with nine plies and a minimum 7mm top layer. This will ensure you get the most out of your floor.
Width
The width does not influence the strength and durability of your floor. It’s a matter of personal taste and styling. Different widths can completely alter the perception of your new floor.
Smaller widths are more traditional, whereas wider widths are perfect for larger rooms. Contact our experts to find out more about the look of different sized widths.
Surface Finish
At True Hardwoods, we sell only the highest quality engineered hardwood flooring. Pay particular attention to the different surface finishes.
Although engineered flooring isn’t 100% waterproof, it can stand up against spills when it’s covered in a waterproof sealant.
You can also invest in an anti-scratch coating, which is perfect for homes filled with rambunctious children and sharp-clawed pets.
Engineered floors are popular because of how easy they are to install. The majority of these floors are constructed using the Tongue and Groove (T&G) method. In other words, the planks can fit together just like the pieces of a puzzle.
So, what are your options when it comes to installation?
The right installation option is a matter of both personal preference and the type of subfloor you have. We can provide tailored recommendations for the best hardwood installation options.
